A Birthday Celebration and Commemoration

The founder of the Shakers, Mother Ann Lee was born on February 29, 1736. Tomorrow night, Saturday, March 4, from 5 to 7 p.m., there will be a celebration of Mother Ann Lee's 281st birthday at The Shaker, 119 Warren Street.

The celebration of Mother Ann Lee's birthday kicks off Women's History Month. The Shakers were active early advocates for equality of the sexes, and The Shaker is commemorating Women's History Month with an exhibition of images of influential Shaker women from the collection of the Shaker Museum|Mount Lebanon

This year--2017--marks the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in New York. To mark the centennial of this landmark event for women's rights, the Shaker Museum is mounting an exhibition entitled Break Every Yoke: The Shakers and the Fight for Gender Equality and Women's Suffrage. The exhibition opens in June.
